For Christmas we got nice pink journal with those words on the cover. i’m not a pencil and paper kind of guy, so Susan has adopted it. the summer of 2015 there were more than a few Best Day Evers. Sussex Drive in for me had to be one. Golfing in Fundy part 1 and 2 (the return of the duffers) made the list. So, as we have more and more Best Day Evers, I’ll add them here.
What makes a Best Day Ever? sometimes t’s smiles from beginning to end. sometimes it’s experiencing something totally unexpected. most often it’s being with a loved one, though i have a Best Day Ever all by my self. so, this will be a running log of Best Day Evers.

Jan 11, 2016. Hawaii Volcano National Park. we thought we’d see lava, maybe up close but more likely way off in the distance. we saw none of that. instead we happened upon a ranger lead hike to mauna ulu crater and spent 3 hours hiking with 2 excited, engaged and knowledgeable rangers. susan and i have a rule, if we ever see a notice for a ranger led hike, we take it. we’ll make the time for it, and have been rarely disappointed.
we learned about the different types of lava, aa and pahoehoe. light and dense. we saw formations created by splatter, by liquid flow, and by the wind. the ranger explained everything we were seeing under our feet and we could imagine what it would have looked like when it erupted. and it erupted from 1969-1974. not that long ago. we followed a fissure all the way up mauna ulu to where steam vents bathed us in hot mist. we could see the continuation of the fissure off in the distance.
so, what made this a best day ever? we expected one thing but got something completely different, unexpected, and not the least bit disappointing.
